Next State LAVFW President is from VFW Post 4647

LAVFW State of California President, Joyce Bilyeu

Congratulations to Joyce Bilyeu on her election as the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars State President for the Department of California.

An “Army Brat,” Joyce joined the LAVFW in 1994 through the eligibility of her father Dick Bilyeu.  Her father served 20 years in the U.S. Army with 3 ½ years as a POW and survivor of the Bataan Death March. He is also the author of the book titled “Lost in Action”, a term used to account for soldiers last seen in combat but not identified as killed or captured.

For 25 years Joyce has worked in the field of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Prevention.  She currently works at the Child Abuse Prevention Center (CAPC) of Sacramento as the AmeriCorps Training Manager, where she provides overall management and coordination of CAPC AmeriCorps Training.  Joyce serves on the Sacramento County Children’s Coalition and the Sacramento County Domestic Violence Prevention Collaborative.

Joyce is a Charter and Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans Ladies Auxiliary – Dick Bilyeu Chapter 93 (named after her father), in Antelope, CA, where she has served as the Commander for the past 5 years.

She is also a member of the Military Order of the Cooties Auxiliary and Life Member of the National Home for Children.

It is her commitment to her father, and to those who have served (and are currently serving) this great nation that they are not forgotten.   Joyce truly believes that a “Soldier is not Dead….Unless they are Forgotten….Lest We Forget.”

Soups On! Fun and Food to Raise the Spirits of our Warriors

The VFW Post 4647 Ladies Auxiliary hosted a luncheon for the Warriors in transition out at McClellan on Monday.   There were also Men’s Auxiliary and Post members who helped.

Since it is November and the holidays are beginning, homemade soups were on the menu.  We’ve been having some rainy days and it would be a welcome comfort for the soldiers who are away from home.  In California style, the weather was gorgeous so we decided to move the venue out doors.

Just look at the Autumn leaves and the air was crisp yet warm.

The break in routine at the community-based warrior in transition unit allows members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Ladies Auxiliary District 17 to show a gesture of gratitude to soldiers who have served overseas and those who are helping them.

Pumpkin and Apple pies made from scratch by a Veteran Marine who’s son is over in Iraq.  Let me tell you… these pies were the best!  Real, honest to goodness flavor.  The apple pies went quick.

VFW Post 4647 Fire Works Booth at Watt & Elk Horn

We have our Fire Works Booth at Watt and Elk Horn again this year. We will be near the Auto Zone. This is our 3rd year here and we are building a great clientele. We need volunteers to help run the booth. This is a big money maker for us. We need all the help we can get. If you cannot work a shift maybe you can refer customers to us. There is more than one way to help.

Coming home…a very personal journey

This is a moving tribute by a fellow veteran returning from duty in Iraq.

There are no words that I can express for the emotions that this video stirred in my heart. So touching, so real and personal. ~ Chrysti

I present you, “I Will Keep You In My Eye (a place on the map)”. by Susan http://www.youtube.com/user/ooolong9

This video does not specifically represent all of the views of the United States Armed Forces.

Just like everything else in life, war is an individual experience. It’s not a political objective, it’s a change of life. Personally I had it so very lucky in comparison.

I posted this video, because I was trying to work Misty Mayhems music into a video. I listened to this song about lost love, and all I could think of was Iraq. Taking a shower I tried to wash the idea down the drain because I swore that I would never post something like this, or do anything that would publicly credit myself. Not because I am ashamed, quite the opposite, but not prepared to openly share this experience, which I hadnt done until now, with out lacing it with a sense of patriotism to mask my more subtle feelings on the matter.

These people touched my life, and like others, my thoughts turn to them, and this experience. I know not everyone feels the same, and understandably so.

Lessons learned: When away from family, friends, car, TV shows, and most of my worldly attachments, and put my efforts into a cause that I believed in, I found a sense of peace that I had rarely found before, and never for any duration of time. This wasn’t in a church house; it was in my heart. Not that there was all peace and love there, but when I actually stopped and taught someone something, helped somebody, it was always there.

At those times I found the person I could be.
